Ecosystem Biology Lab

Overview

Welcome to the Emmerson Ecosystem Lab. We are based in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen's University Belfast. Our research focuses on the drivers of biodiversity change across marine, freshwater and terrestrial systems. We do this using a mixture of empirical and theoretical approaches, and unify our work across these different systems by focusing on the trophic interactions amongst species. We are concerned with how biodiversity change leads to effects on ecosystem functioning and stability.

I am a community ecologist with an interest in the drivers of biodiversity change across a range of systems. My work focuses on the effects of biodiversity loss on ecosystem functioning and stability across marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems and I use a mixture of experimental and modelling approaches. At Queen's I am a Professor of Biodiversity and I am Director of Research for the Ecosystem Biology and Sustainability Research cluster.
